I dove in spontaneously. Didn’t think too long about it…just signed right up.

What did I do?

I pledged to eat local foods during the entire month of October. I even officially accepted the eat local challenge, a commitment made by those concerned about their local economies. Fortunately, the benefits of eating homegrown are many. Read about something called the local multiplier effect here.

Dare I say, I am going to also expand my eating local commitment to an overall buying local commitment? I’m convinced it won’t be too difficult. All it takes is a little different way of thinking.

Of course, I’m quite confident that veggies and eggs are easy to find locally, but I don’t know where to find much of anything else. That’s why I will be conducting research fairly heartily during September.

Before letting go of my money, I will identify and visit the businesses that keep their profits cycling around St. Charles County.

Questions for merchants:

  1. How far do items travel to make it to your store? Local is a relative term. Some people consider a 100-mile radius local. Others define it a lot closer to home.
  2. Where did these products come from, originally? I want to find out if the local market owner buys meat from a local farm? Does the baker buy flour from a nearby mill?
  3. What businesses do you support? I will frequent the merchants and farmers who will most likely keep the money rolling around St. Charles County.

Of course, some things will not be available locally and that’s OK.

The goal of this project is to raise awareness of where products come from and where our money goes after we spend it.

I can’t wait to do my part.

Won’t you join me?

In a past article, I stated I would buy local for a week in September—the project has been upgraded to include the entire month of October!

Stay tuned to read about my adventures in buying locally.

This series of articles is intended to provide many resources and encouragement for others wishing to live the local lifestyle in St. Charles County.
