Tomato sprawl

Is your garden coming in full and lush? Are veggies and fruits colorfully dotting the patch, ready for picking? We thought so at our house.

There was a nearly-ripe tomato almost ready for picking a few days ago. We left him alone on the vine to redden’ up. And he did.

We could see that bright red tomato from the kitchen window. All that green and then—red. How exciting!

Since prices at the grocery store continue to rise, the concept that produce, valuable produce, could be grown in our backyard was frugally quite appealing.

So, out we went. Camera at the ready, the whole family paraded out back to pick our one tomato. What a proud moment for suburbanites.

Imagine the disappointment when we picked our red baby and discovered an ant colony had used it for their own residential sprawl.

Apparently, our tomato busted open during the storms, revealing a shelter complete with food. Some developer-type ants eyed the possibilities and convinced others to follow.  I guess I don’t blame them. Everyone needs a home.

I just hope they have infrastructure costs figured out.
